The Error in Jerry Eze Communion Doctrine

I came upon a clip of Pastor Jerry Eze's NSPPD prayer program. In this clip, Jerry Eze instructed his followers to take communion for three reasons: healing, speedy manifestation, and answered prayers. I was disappointed because this demonstration reduced the goal of communion to materialism and personal desires.

There is no biblical evidence that suggests communion should be taken for a desired effect. In fact, Jesus did not introduce communion until the final night of His earthly ministry. According to Jesus, communion is a practice that Christians should follow in remembrance of His completed work on the cross.

“And Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then Jesus took a cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.” — Jesus, Luke 22: 19-20

Pastor Jerry Eze is in error. He has created a false doctrine out of communion that shouldn’t be followed or considered biblically doctrinal.

Let’s examine the types of communion that Pastor Jerry Eze presented.

COMMUNION FOR HEALING

Pastor Jerry thinks that this sort of communion has the ability to cure an illness. Jesus did not heal in this manner; He simply laid hands on the sick. Furthermore, Jesus didn’t instruct the disciples to use communion as a medium for healing

COMMUNION OF EARLIER THAN EXPECTED

Pastor Jerry suggests that this kind of communion can produce immediate results.

Jesus answers our petitions according to His plan and timing. To believe that a communion can produce immediate results is not only unbiblical, but also an attempt to control how God moves in our lives. Most importantly, it instills impatience which is not a virtue that Christians should possess.

“For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall be fulfilled, If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.” — Habakuk 2:3

COMMUNION OF ANSWERS

Pastor Jerry suggests that this type of communion will move God to answer prayers about our needs. Again, there is no record of Jesus instructing His disciples to take communion for answered prayers. Jesus is aware of our needs and will meet them. But first, we must set our hearts on God rather than our own needs.

“So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” — Matthew 7: 31-33

Friends, do not be deceived. The Bible says how in the last days false doctrines will arise and tickle the ears of believers. These type of communion presented by Pastor Jerry Eze is unbiblical. This communion practice is nothing but animism which suggests objects have power. Furthermore, it reduces the power of Jesus to objects, rituals, and repetitive words.

Communion serves just to remind us of Jesus' sacrifice for our sins. It shouldn’t be taken for personal gain. If you need healing, simply pray but also seek medical treatment. If you need answers to problems, pray but also see what human efforts can do to solve your problems. You don’t need to take communion after prayers to seal your hours of prayers. All you need is faith that God will answer your prayers.
